Oskar Lafontaine

The former-SDP member, now leader of new socialist party Die Linke (The Left) in Germany spoke in the Bundestag recently about the recession. I'll find the video but that'll only be for German-speakers i'm afraid. For those who don't, he says that the recession is a product of capitalism. And the only way that recessions will end is to get rid of capitalism.

As an economist, i have to tell you he's right. The recession is all part of the boom and bust nature of capitalism. But how do you feel about Lafontaine and his policies?

I respect your opinion. But I like capitalism. I am looking forward to seeing that "socialist" we are stuck with check out of the whitehouse. Let me live or let me die. Just keep the government out of my life! Some of them are bigger crooks than the mafia. They think they are smarter and can run my life better than I can. That is why the last election here is draining the life out of me. He gives some people hope. (Don't know why.) But he takes all hope away from me.

So in short give me capitalism over socialism. I never want to be a "sheeple". I have lived too long to go there now.

Err, you do realise that economics is the communism-neoliberalism scale? It has nothing to do with the libertarian-authoritarian scale. There are fascist capitalists and there are libertarian socialists. You knew that, right?

No I don't know all that! But I know what I like and I don't like what we have here now. :icon_frown:

There are at least three dimensions i know of:

Communism--------------------Neoliberalism

Libertarianism------------------Authoritarianism

Pragmatism--------------------Idealism

You can be a combination of any or anywhere in between in any combination.

In Britain at the moment, there are quite a few protests. A lot of it is anti-authoritarian and anti-capitalist. Mainly because the Government there is eroding civil liberties and screwing up with their "rescue plans". I don't think many people at the moment are happy with their Governments.
