I was wondering the other day if my parents can command a level of respect that goes beyond my own principles?

How did this come to my mind? My parents and I were out with this other family (a couple). The male brought his mother, who was talking about how her words are law and it doesn't matter whether it is right or not.

When I heard this. I blew up on the inside. Like "No GRANDMA! Things don't work like that." And really i got to thinking do they real command a level of respect, even when i'm older and financially independent. Does it really matter? I mean i get into fights with my own parents, but I realize the only reason i hold back is because I'm under their house and their rules. But what about when i have my own job? Are we then elevated to same level?

Because removing all the emotion-aspects of parent-kid relationships, doesn't everyones parents just have financial submission?

What are your thoughts?

Our parents did bring us here, but i have a tidbit feeling that doesn't make them God either.

For all intents and purposes, Yes. Parents do and its not at all unwarranted. Yeah, they did bring you here into this world but they are also responsible( or should be anyhow) for properly bringing one up into life and preparing them for challenges and decisions along the way while building a proper home for one to grow up in.

Now, it doesn't make them god per say as one will notice all the tiny amounts of inconsistency and hypocrisies(and even the dreaded levels of hyperbole) and whatnot about their parents as life goes on especially past the confused angry realm of the adolescent years.

However, the respect one should feel for his or her parents should be a life long thing if both, one was reared correctly under his or her parents and if, again, the parents stay accepting and understanding while maintaining the love they have for the child while still dispensing their knowledge or discipline forward as warranted.

As for the discussion of under their roof. Even if you have an occupation, even if you are beyond your adolescent years, you're still under their roof and its just out of respect for them that you honor that. Its not because one still thinks of them as god, again, its just a part of convention and out of that child parent level of respect. Its more a judgment call I would suppose. Personally, though, I'll always respect my parents even with all the chinks in their armor, the love and admiration I have for both is too strong for me to just chuck it once I'm independent. It just doesn't feel right any other way.
